I loved going to public school.
If we don't count my preschool (if only Bill DeBlasio had instituted Pre-K for All five years earlier!), I have only ever attended public schools. Many may be shocked that the government proudly funds the Fashion Institute of Technology as a State University of New York.
Every Sunday night growing up, I would lay out my outfits for the week on my window seat. I took pride in being able to ask my mom for her phone, so I could check the weather and plan accordingly. While my style shifted over the years, I always gravitated towards "simple" pieces.
I loved figuring out how my peers would view me for that week: was I quirky? Artistic? A Yankees fan? The options were unlimited, but their excess often led to my crying to my mother. #firstworldproblems
Honestly, I was envious of my private and charter school peers. Their outfits were pre-selected, pre-washed, pre-worn. They were able to fall into a familiar pattern by the second week of school. They never had to worry about what their peers thought of them (or so I thought). I longed for the simplicity that a private school uniform could bring.
In this week's edition of Fitted By Friends, Jordyn Milan joins us as stylist extraordinaire and my personal style icon. Jordyn gravitates to the simple, timeless silhouettes of my dreams. While her outfits may not directly take inspiration from private school uniforms, they are just as classy and wearable. Read on for the 'fit!

Jordyn's got (a) style (business).
In high school, Jordyn founded @j.thrifts444, an Instagram account that sells thrifted clothing bundles at affordable prices. When she's not at the thrift store, Jordyn studies fashion business at FIT.
I don't remember the first time I met Jordyn, and that may be because we live in the same dorm hall, just a few floors away. Throughout the first semester, we would run into each other in the halls, the elevator, the workroom, and make promises of hanging out at some point. Alas, schoolwork caught up to both of us, and that fated hangout never happened.
It wasn't until after spring class registration that we realized we shared a product development class! Every Monday morning, I pick up Jordyn at 8:50 on the dot to grab breakfast croissants and Starbucks matcha. We finally have the time to gab about our sales associate jobs and the political and economic state of the world (iykyk).

Jordyn and I own the same pair of wide-leg Gap jeans, so I pulled them on while she picked the matching top out of her closet. The jacket ties in the back, beautifully cinching my waist in all the right places. I felt like I was wearing a jacket-corset. A jorset? A cacket? One of those has to be right…
Before photographing the look, Jordyn flipped up my cuffs and tucked the jacket behind the belt buckle. Jordyn paid attention to every detail every step of the way, and when I asked her what she wanted to do to my hair, she pulled out a photo of me in my black clip headband.
When I was growing out my hair (from a pixie cut gone wrong) at the end of last year, my foolproof solution was wearing this headband 24/7. The headband did wonders for my look, and when it was time to let my luscious locks (F.A.B.) down in January, I left it to retire on a Command hook on my dorm wall. That was, until Jordyn resurrected the headpiece for this chic outfit.
Paired with these Free People sunglasses and my trusty cowboy boots, the whole look is incredibly fashion school baddie in a way I have never been before. I could go to meetings in this outfit- scratch that, I could hold meetings in this outfit. The character that Jordyn has created through her sheer creative vision is the Canadian Tuxedo. She lives and dies in a full denim outfit (joutfit, if you will (I know I can)) and when presented with this week's numbers, she'll look at them calmly and then walk out of the room, face blanker than Gayle King when Katy Perry began to sing in that Blue Origin rocket ship. Or something like that.
Thank you so much to Jordyn for styling me! I had so much fun running around the dorms with you, picking out pieces for this look. An extra special shout out to Diya, who lent us her digital camera when mine wasn't working. You're a real one!
